Dubai: Even though the challenges raised by the Covid epidemic at the global level are not over yet, Dubai is preparing to make a huge leap in the tourism sector. Dubai is rapidly moving towards the D33 economic agenda, which aims to double the economic growth of the city within the next ten years.

With the support of the government’s deep cooperation and assistance, the public and private sectors in the field of tourism have announced huge projects. The city reckons that this will be enough to attract investors from around the world to Dubai. Even though the growth recorded in 2019 before Covid could not be completely surpassed, most of the sectors recorded huge growth in the beginning of 2023. The long vision and precise planning of the rulers helped Dubai to achieve this. Dubai has been able to serve as a bridge in the field of commercial and cultural tourism while raising the standard of Dubai in the field of tourism.

According to the figures released by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the tourism sector contributed 29 billion dollars to the economy of the UAE in 2022. Dubai’s dream plan, which was inaugurated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, in November of last year, targeting an additional investment of 100 billion dirhams and 40 million hotel visitors in the tourism sector by 2031, is also for the growth of the emirate. The momentum picked up.

Helal Saeed Almari, Director General of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, said Dubai’s ability to simultaneously harness the impact of global challenges while harnessing new opportunities and industry trends has made it one of the world’s most attractive and fastest-growing tourism and economic regions. Different tourism projects, marketing strategies and world-class infrastructure have made the world travelers choose Dubai as their first tourism destination.

Dubai won the TripAdvisor’s Choice Award in 2023 as the world’s most famous tourism destination. This is the second time that Dubai has won this award. Dubai ranks second in the world’s 100 most popular tourism destinations, just behind Paris. In 2022, Dubai International Airport was also included in the list of busiest airports in the world. In the first quarter of the financial year 2023, Dubai has recorded a huge growth in the tourism sector. The number of night visitors during this period was 4.75 million.

However, this is an indication of rapid growth in the tourism sector. Emirates NBD officials said that if it progresses in this way, Dubai will be able to surpass the record of 16.7 million visitors recorded in 2019.

Airport officials estimate that the number of passengers arriving at Dubai International Airport will exceed 78 million in 2023. Dubai’s core hotel sector has already outpaced growth since pre-Covid. An 83 per cent growth was recorded in the number of tourists visiting hotels in the city between January and March. This is the highest growth rate in the world. Meanwhile, it had reached 84 percent in the first quarter of 2019 before Covid. After achieving these achievements, the capacity of hotel rooms has also increased by 26 percent. Dubai’s hotels accommodated 10.98 million overnight visitors in the same period this year compared to the first quarter of FY19. Compared to 2019, the growth in the region is 27 percent. The average rate of rooms is 607 dirhams. 22 percent growth compared to 2019. The figures also show that the revenue from the room category has grown by 21 percent compared to 2019. Revenue rose to AED 504 and average overnight visitors rose from 3.4 to four.

Along with that, Dubai has been able to achieve huge growth in the number of large business meetings and exhibition fairs. According to the KPMG Dubai Hospitality Report, with the end of Expo 2020, hotel occupancy in Dubai is at its highest level in the last 15 years.

Dubai is the venue for global summits such as the COP28 Climate Summit, the Dubai Airshow and international business and sports fairs. In 2022, Dubai was also the main focus of the Qatar Football World Cup. During the World Cup, 50 percent of the flights to Qatar were through Dubai.
