Former President Ma Ying-jeou led students from Dajiu Academy for an exchange visit to Hunan University this morning. During the visit, Ma Ying-jeou mentioned that “our country” has amended the constitution and divided it into two regions, Taiwan and the mainland, which are both part of the Republic of China and China. Ma and his group interacted with students from Hunan University in the conference room of the National Supercomputing Changsha Center. There were 28 students from Taiwan and 32 students from Hunan University. In his final speech, Ma Ying-jeou stated that both Taiwan and the mainland region are defined in Article 2 of the “Regulations on the Relations between People across the Taiwan Strait.” He added that there is a sense of connection between people on both sides of the strait as they share the same language and race. He also stated it is essential for both sides to adhere to the one-China policy, reduce unnecessary barriers and encourage sincere communication. Ma Ying-jeou also used Hunan dialect to communicate with the mainland students present, and introduced the story of Taiwan’s opening for visiting relatives in the mainland in 1987. Duan Xianzhong, President of Hunan University, appreciated Ma’s efforts to foster intellectual harmony between the students from both sides of the strait.

Before Ma Ying-jeou led students to exchange with mainland students, he also visited the Science Museum of Hunan University. This is the place where the surrender ceremony of the 4th Surrender Area was held after Japan surrendered in World War II in 1945. Afterwards, they visited Yuelu Academy on campus.
