Several monuments in Brussels, Antwerp and Mechelen will plunge into darkness on Saturday evening, during the Earth Hour event organized by WWF. Every year, at the end of March, the NGO launches an international mobilization appeal to highlight “the urgency of acting in favor of human beings and nature”. During this action, citizens, cities and businesses around the world are encouraged to turn off the lights for one hour.

In Brussels, the lights on the facades of the Grand-Place, the Bourse and the Atomium will go out from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. A way, for the City of Brussels, to “make as many people aware of the importance of energy saving”. On this occasion, the City is organizing a “silent disco” in the heart of the Stock Exchange building. During this free event, the DJs’ music will be sent directly into the headphones distributed to the public, who will be able to move their hips while remaining silent to the outside world.

The Stib participates

For its part, the Stib will dim, at the appropriate time, the lighting in a third of its metro and pre-metro stations. For security reasons, it is “obviously impossible to plunge our entire network into total darkness,” explained the Brussels operator. “However, reduced lighting will save around 470 kWh, which is approximately equivalent to the monthly electricity consumption of 1.6 Brussels households. »

The cities of Antwerp and Mechelen will also join the action and turn off the lights in many historical and cultural places. From a more structural perspective, the city of Antwerp also reiterated its ambition to convert all its lighting to LED by 2030.

The Earth Hour initiative, launched in 2007 by the WWF in Sydney, brings together stakeholders and citizens from more than 190 countries each year, on the last Saturday in March, to warn of the effects of climate change.
