EC vice president sees no renewable energy alternatives for European sovereignty

The only way the European Union can achieve energy independence is with the help of renewable energy, says Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President of the European Commission. He noted that the EU “left with very little gas, very little coal and no oil.”

“We are accelerating our transition to renewable energy because we have no alternatives in Europe. The only sovereignty that we can get in the energy sector is through an increase in renewable energy,” Mr. Timmermans said at the Munich Security Conference (quoted from “RIA Novosti”).

According to the think tank Ember, in 2022, about 22% of electricity generated in the EU came from solar and wind energy, which was the highest figure in the history of the EU. At the same time, energy generation using gas combustion accounted for 20%, 1 p.p. less than in 2021. The transition to green energy was accelerated against the backdrop of a reduction in gas supplies from Russia.
