Ecuador is experiencing a prison crisis in several of its states after learning of the escape of ‘Fito’, leader of the drug trafficking cartel, Los Choneros’ and one of the most feared criminals in the country who had been in prison for 12 years.

The Litoral penitentiary in Guayaquil, Turi and El Inca in Cuenca are some of the prisons that have riots in their facilities. President Daniel Noboa established the State of Exception in the face of the wave of violence that the country is experiencing.

What happened to ‘Fito’ in the Guayaquil penitentiary?

The criminal ‘Fito’ escaped from the Litoral Penitentiary without the police officers realizing it until the night of January 7. Upon realizing his escape, the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office began an investigation of the criminal to find out his whereabouts.

“Today the Police, together with the Armed Forces, realized the non-presence of one of the inmates who prevails in this social rehabilitation center,” reported César Zapata, Police Commander.

The Secretary of Communication, Roberto Izurieta, announced through Teleamazonas Ecuador that the prisoner ‘Fito’ had escaped hours before an operation was carried out at the Litoral Penitentiary.
