Edgar Sevikyan: From Russian National Team Rejection to Ferencvaros Debut Goal – The Journey of a Rising Star

Last August, Paris NN midfielder Edgar Sevikyan received his first call to the Russian national team, but refused to go to the training camp with Valery Karpin’s team and stated that he had already made a choice in favor of Armenia.

“I am very pleased that the coaching staff of the Russian national team paid attention and appreciated my work and results! Russia has given me a lot in terms of my professionalism and career,” noted Sevikyan. “However, at the moment I must inform you that I will not be able to accept the invitation to the Russian national team, since I have already decided to play for the Armenian national team.”

In October, Sevikyan made his debut for the Armenians in the qualification for Euro 2024 – he came on as a substitute in the match with Latvia, and then played a half against North Macedonia. The footballer’s next goal is probably going to Europe. Moreover, Edgar already had experience playing in Spain for the Levante farm club (4 goals in 44 matches).

At the same time, rumors began to appear that Sevikyan could move to Nantes, CSKA or Krasnodar – these were the clubs that most actively showed interest in the young football player. But everything finally became clear only in the winter transfer window, when Paris NN announced Sevikyan’s departure to the Hungarian Ferencvaros. Edgar’s choice greatly surprised head coach Sergei Yuran.

“Edgar himself will only lose from this. The Hungarian championship is weaker than the Russian one, and he will still need to join the team and adapt in terms of play. I said before and now I think that he should have played with us until the end of the championship, got stronger and only then moved on if there were options. I would understand if he went to Krasnodar or CSKA, but the Hungarian championship, Ferencvaros… I don’t know. But since we made such a decision, for God’s sake,” Yuran said in an interview with the Championship.

Obviously, Sevikyan wanted to play in Europe. In the RPL, the football player was offered more favorable financial conditions, but even big money did not stop Edgar. Paris NN also met Sevikyan halfway and agreed to sell the footballer to Ferencvarosi for 1.2 million euros.

“Sevikyan in Ferencvaros is not the most profitable deal for us, of course,” Dmitry Sergeev, managing partner of PARI and member of the supervisory board of Paris NN, wrote in a telegram. — The offers from Russian clubs were more profitable, but the player had long wanted to play in Europe. Sevikyan has done a lot for our club, for which we thank him very much. Good luck to Edgar in his career, I’m sure everything will work out!”

Sevikyan did not immediately prove himself in the new club – in February he made his debut in the Hungarian Cup, but was left out of the lineup for the Conference League matches against Olympiacos. And then he ended up in the reserves for four matches.

Edgar was brought into the main lineup only in mid-March – he came on as a substitute in four matches in a row in the Hungarian championship, playing a total of just over 45 minutes. And today, April 10, he appeared in the starting lineup and scored a fantastic debut goal against Diosgyor. In the 21st minute, Sevikyan burst into the visitors’ penalty area from the right flank and irresistibly shot with his left foot into the far top corner!

It was Edgar’s goal that brought Ferencvaros victory in the match of the 21st round of the Hungarian championship – 2:1. And his club leads the standings by 11 points and is close to another championship.
