Electric car at 100 euros per month: who will be able to benefit from the device promised by Macron

The Minister for Energy Transition clarified this Thursday, June 2, the framework for low-cost leasing of electric cars. The models offered from one hundred euros per month will be accessible to disadvantaged audiences. Here’s what we know.

Agnès Pannier-Runacher specified the conditions which should surround the proposal for “social leasing” around electric cars. The goal is to offer vulnerable people the rental of electric cars for 100 euros per month. A real low cost offer which would participate in the decarbonization of the French car fleet.

Who can benefit from it?

“We will deploy an affordable offer of electric vehicles (…) by setting up leasing mechanisms to support the most modest households”, was the promise of candidate Macron. The measurement is precise.

For Agnès Pannier-Runacher, two profiles could access this unique offer. “Those for whom the vehicle is a work tool, I am thinking of liberal nurses for example, (…) and those who cannot afford to switch to a clean vehicle because it is too expensive today on the market”, announces the Minister of Energy Transition on France Info. In short, this social leasing is aimed at French people who “need it the most”.

As our colleagues remind news, Emmanuel Macron’s campaign team had already specified the target audiences previously. These were the liberal professions and in particular socio-medical, but also young people in precariousness.

When ?

The measure is not for now. The Minister wishes to bring together the sector and the financial players for a rapid implementation. We know that the device should not be launched in September. “It’s probably not for September,” said Agnès Pannier-Runacher. The objective is to lease approximately 100,000 vehicles over one year.

The issue of charging stations

On the cost, the measure is not yet quantified. But its impact should be revealed before inclusion in the amending finance law. But putting 100,000 more electric vehicles on the market requires adapting the charging infrastructure.

“This is a major obstacle for city dwellers who do not have a garage at their disposal. (…) Modest people have often been forced to leave large urban centers to find accommodation, and drive a lot. Autonomy , the fear of running out of fuel, are significant questions”, analyzes Fabien Neuvy of the Cetelem Observatory of the automobile, quoted by Actu. All is not (yet) won.
