Electricity and gas: More people switching in the past year

Competition on the energy market is gaining momentum. In the previous year, 345,649 customers changed their provider, the regulatory authority E-Control announced today, Monday. For comparison: there were 212,004 people changing in 2022, and 331,339 in the previous year. “After the binding period expired, many people took the opportunity to save money by changing suppliers and choosing a new provider,” said E-Control board member Wolfgang Urbantschitsch.

In the previous year, 245,998 customers (including 198,586 households) were looking for a new electricity supplier, and 99,651 customers (including 93,006 households) were looking for a new gas provider. This corresponds to switching rates of 3.9 percent for electricity and 7.9 percent for gas.

Lower Austria is happy to change

The most changes to both electricity and gas occurred in Lower Austria, with 92,578 and 42,075 customers respectively. In Upper Austria, 33,834 customers changed their electricity provider and 10,676 customers changed their gas provider.

According to the authority, costs can be saved not only by switching providers, but also by increasing energy efficiency.
