Electricity tariffs: What trap hides the green, how costs soar – 2024-03-14 17:30:16

‘Hidden charges’ that drive up electricity costs by up to 50% are in the “fine print” of the new colored tariffs: Even if it belongs to the special “green” tariff, every consumer should be very careful, as the prices determined by the respective provider are prices after discount. And a large part of this discount is taken up by that of “consistency”. So, if someone neglects to pay the bill on time they will suddenly find themselves paying off an “inflated” bill of up to 50%.

And this can happen because if a consumer has chosen a “green” tariff, he may not know that a price of, for example, €0.14/kWh has been set, provided he is consistent in paying his bill. So, if he is even one day late in paying him he can be faced with… unpleasant surprises since the cost can even go up to €0.21/kWh, i.e. almost 50% higher.

The “traps”

Consumers should therefore beware of such “traps”, as they should “search” enough for what type of tariff they should choose in the future.

The prices of the “colored” electricity tariffs from all providers can be monitored by consumers through the relevant platform of the Waste, Energy and Water Regulatory Authority (RAAEF).

Specifically, on the page, consumers can select the type of tariff (“special” corresponds to the so-called “green”) to be updated on the price of the kilowatt hour.

The table includes the fixed charge and the final supply price of the relevant month, after calculating any discounts. For the transparent information of consumers, the condition on the basis of which the respective discount is granted is indicated.

As the Authority points out: To facilitate consumers in comparing the prices of electricity supply products, the Authority will maintain on its website a potential “Power Price Publication Table”, which will include the prices of special (green) tariffs, as well and the prices of the fixed “blue” invoices, i.e. the invoices whose price remains constant throughout the validity of the contract, a period of at least one (1) year, and the floating “yellow” invoices.

In this way, consumers will be able to easily and quickly compare the prices of all suppliers. The consumer can choose the tariff category (domestic, business), as well as the month of consumption.

By default, the current month’s special invoices are displayed.

The prices of the “green” tariff

Therefore, the electricity prices for the “green” electricity tariffs for the month of January 2024 have been announced by the providers.

As can be seen from the announcements, the prices of these tariffs range from 0.14 euros to 0.17 euros per kilowatt hour for the current month.

Analytically:

Protergia: The electricity price is 14.26 cents per kilowatt hour.
Elpedison: The charge price for electricity is set at 17.06 cents per kilowatt hour.
Heron: The electricity price is 14.052 cents per kilowatt hour.
Natural Gas of Greece: The charging price of electricity is 14.265 cents per kilowatt hour.
NRG: The electricity price rises to 14.1 minutes per kilowatt hour
Volterra: At 14.3945 minutes per kilowatt hour the current price is set
Zenith: The electricity price is at 16.947 cents per kilowatt hour.
PPC: The company charges 13.635 cents per kilowatt hour for consumption up to 500 kilowatt hours per month and 14.595 cents for higher consumption and 11.155 cents for the night tariff.

Recommendations from the Ministry of Environment and Energy

The Ministry of Environment and Energy recently published a document on the special green tariff which stated among other things:

The final supply price will be announced by the 1st day of each consumption month.

The special invoice may also include a fixed commission fee of up to 5 euros per month, as well as discounts.

One of its main innovations is that on the consumption bill, the provider will show a single – after calculating any discounts – the final supply price in €/MWh per billing month.

The basic supply price will remain fixed, at least for 6 months, while the fixed supply charge and discounts can be modified every month, following an announcement on the providers’ website and an update with the first consumption bill that will follow the modification.

Consumers who do not choose one of the available tariffs (fixed: blue, variable: yellow, dynamic: orange, special: green) will automatically switch to the green tariff. Nevertheless, it will be possible to return to the previous contract with their provider with a simple procedure until January 31, 2024 and to choose any type of tariff or provider, drawing up a relevant contract at any time.

The special electricity supply tariff will be offered by the providers and can be chosen by the consumers even after December 31, 2024.
