Elena Rybakina Secures Year-End World Number One Ranking in Tokyo

Elena Rybakina secured the year-end women’s singles number one ranking by defeating Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in the last 16 of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Thursday, guaranteeing she cannot be overtaken at the top of the WTA standings.

Tokyo Victory Cements Year-End Top Spot

The straight-set win over fellow Kazakhstani Yulia Putintseva sealed the top ranking for the 27-year-old in Tokyo. Rybakina served six aces and produced 25 winners during the encounter. The result ensures she cannot be overtaken in the closing weeks of the 2026 season. She triumphed at the Ningbo Open last week to claim her fourth title of the year before receiving a first-round bye in Tokyo.

“It means a lot. This is something we worked for with the team,” Rybakina told reporters. “So many great players and we are all really close to each other, and I’m happy that now with last week and with today’s win I made it possible to secure number one at the end of the year. It’s an amazing achievement and hopefully we can continue this way next year.”

Grand Slam Dominance and Rankings Ascent

Rybakina captured both the Australian Open and US Open titles earlier in 2026, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the finals of both major tournaments. She officially usurped the Belarusian to claim the world number one ranking in September. A quarter-final victory over China’s Zheng Qinwen at the US Open paved the way for her rise to the top of the singles rankings for the first time.

Rybakina’s victory over Putintseva on Thursday confirmed she will end 2026 at the summit regardless of results at the season finale. Meanwhile, the Pan Pacific Open draw saw a major upset elsewhere as Naomi Osaka was beaten 6-3, 7-5 by 18-year-old Slovakian Mia Pohankova.
