Eli Illidis Unmasked in Tears on “The Masked Singer

Israeli sports broadcaster Eli Ildis delivered an unexpectedly emotional television appearance when he was unmasked as the contestant inside the Sushi costume on the reality singing competition program The Masked Singer. The veteran television personality struggled to hold back tears as he removed his mask before the judges and studio audience, creating a deeply personal moment that caught the panel entirely off guard. The surprise was especially great because Ildis is not an unfamiliar face on Israeli television, having spent long years in front of the cameras.

The elimination marked a surprising turn for the popular entertainment show, as none of the judges or viewers had guessed Ildis’s identity during his time on stage. While celebrity panelists floated names such as mentalist Lior Lusurad, Yossi Shitrit, and Oded Menashe, Ildis remained entirely off their radar. Botty the AI also tried to help and in retrospect turned out to be spot on when it threw out, among other things, the name of the famous sports presenter.

“As far as I’m concerned, food is not child’s play,” the Sushi character had teased in earlier clues, referencing Ildis’s past hosting role on the program The Revenge of the Nerds on Reshet 13 where only children participated and his history of presenting children’s television. Other clues included references to a restaurant clock pointing to the number six, pointing back to his work on Channel 6, and a mention of shifting life paths following his divorce after 23 years of marriage to news anchor Miki Haimovitch.

Clues That Pointed to a Broadcaster’s Career

Additional hints dropped throughout the competition pointed directly to Ildis’s varied media background outside of sports journalism. Clues touching on culinary arts and relationships with professional chefs aligned with his previous television projects, including co-hosting the program License to Enjoy alongside chef Haim Cohen, as well as his participation in MasterChef VIP.

Despite these specific breadcrumbs, the panel failed to connect the dots to the familiar television host. When the mask finally came off, the transition from sports broadcaster reporting on others to the center of an intensely personal moment created an unscripted dynamic on stage.

Additional Clues Decoded from the Performance

Further clues featured the Sushi character blessing the food, pointing to Ildis’s past hosting of the program Sof HaDerech, which aimed to connect religious and secular couples. Additional hints included a magazine cover titled Food News, connecting to Ildis hosting sports news, and text on the magazine about food safety management, linking to a safety segment Ildis hosted during his program with Haim Cohen. The character also spoke about a decision to leave the country, referencing a program Ildis hosted called The Decision, alongside a history of hosting the daily children’s news edition Five and a Half and winning broadcaster of the year twice at the kids’ choice awards.

Uncharted Territory on the Reality Stage

The emotional weight of the unmasking shifted the atmosphere in the studio, where the panel and audience had gathered expecting a routine reveal. Instead, Ildis’s reaction showed the personal stakes contestants experience beneath elaborate disguises, far removed from the microphone and the professional distance he typically maintains during sports broadcasts.

As the competition continues, the unexpected exit of the Sushi costume leaves remaining disguised performers—including Eden Pines, who performs as the Fire Ant—to face mounting pressure from judges trying to decode increasingly complex clues.
