And he urged Ukraine to “stay strong”, while giving his “sympathies to the great people of Russia, who do not want this”.

Musk, who has become the world’s richest man by revolutionizing the car industry, admitted his stance was counterproductive.

“I hate to say it, but we have to increase oil and gas production immediately. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures,” he tweeted on Friday.

“Obviously this would negatively affect Tesla, but sustainable energy solutions simply cannot react instantly to offset Russian oil and gas exports.”

Observers say the increase is due to rising oil prices, as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and sanctions imposed on the country raise fears of supply shortages.

It is the latest in a series of tweets that the businessman has made this week about the conflict in Europe.

In one, the head of SpaceX mocked Russia after the head of its space program threatened that the country would not provide the US with rocket engines, and posted a video of his company putting yet another into orbit.

He has also tweeted advice to Ukrainian leaders on how best to keep the internet running in the war-torn country, after activating SpaceX’s satellite internet over it and providing terminals.
