Elvis and Eminem Rights Holders Sue Suno Over AI Training

Rights holders for Elvis Presley and Eminem’s music publisher filed two separate lawsuits against AI music generator Suno in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on November 6, accusing the platform of training models on copyrighted songs without permission and enabling users to generate unauthorized vocal imitations.

Suno Faces Lawsuits over Presley and Eminem Compositions

  • Authentic Brands Group and Raleigh Music Publishing claim Suno copied 859 Presley compositions, invoking Tennessee’s 2024 ELVIS Act.
  • Eight Mile Style seeks about $41 million for 269 Eminem compositions, including tracks like “Lose Yourself” and “The Real Slim Shady”.
  • Suno maintains it exists to help people create new, original music, employs screening guardrails, and previously reached a licensing agreement with Warner Music Group in November 2025.

Plaintiffs Allege Suno Uses Elvis Likeness and Eminem Songs

The Presley plaintiffs filed a 51-page complaint alleging that typing the late singer’s name into Suno’s Create function produces music built on his likeness. Lawyers representing the estate wrote in the complaint that “The next Elvis won’t pick up a guitar,” according to mlq.ai reporting. The filing relies on Tennessee’s ELVIS Act, a 2024 statute designed to protect artists’ voices and likenesses from unauthorized artificial intelligence clones.

Separately, Eight Mile Style filed a copyright complaint covering 269 Eminem compositions. Eminem himself is not named as a plaintiff in the action. The publisher seeks approximately $41 million, targeting the statutory maximum of $150,000 for each of the 269 works, alongside $672,000 tied to alleged removal of copyright management information. Both lawsuits were brought by the same legal team, which includes Richard Busch.

Guardrails and Company Response

Suno told Billboard that the company “exists to help people create new, original music” and added that it is “always working to strengthen our guardrails.” The platform asserts that it does not allow prompts naming specific artists or songs, relying instead on third-party systems to screen uploaded audio and lyrics. Neither complaint has been tested in court as of November 8, 2026.

Music Labels Settle or Pursue Claims Against Suno and Udio

These new actions build upon claims major music labels filed against Suno and rival platform Udio in 2024. Universal Music Group settled with Udio in October 2025, followed by Warner Music Group the next month.

Warner also dropped its case against Suno in November 2025 in exchange for a licensing deal requiring Suno to launch licensed models in 2026 and retire existing ones, while Suno acquired Warner’s Songkick concert service. Universal Music and Sony Music continue to pursue active claims against Suno.
