FLAGSTAFF- Federal authorities have reported that it would be necessary to reduce the water supply to users of the Colorado River to avoid the closure of a large dam on the border between Arizona and Utah.
Glen Canyon Dam supplies hydroelectric power to regarding 5 million customers throughout the western United States.
Officials hoped the melting snow would keep Lake Powell afloat to ensure the continued operation of the dam.
But the snow is already melting, and higher-than-normal temperatures and prolonged drought are further lowering water levels in the lake.
The Department of the Interior has proposed retaining the water in the lake to maintain power production.
The agency is requesting a statement on these possible actions from the seven states that depend on the river by April 22.
