The Picardy Wallonia emergency services were alerted on Saturday evening, around 8:20 p.m., that a car had fallen into the Dendre Orientale near Boulevard de l’Est in Ath. This tributary of the Blaton-Nimy canal is channeled as it passes through the center of the city.

Coming from the Tournai and Blaton barracks, two teams of divers were sent to the site. A pumper, an extrication truck, an ambulance, a Smur and a command vehicle were also dispatched to the scene of the accident.
”For an unknown reason, a motorist lost control of his car, which fell into the canal. The vehicle fell 7 to 8 meters before sinking into the water. Fortunately, at this location, there is little water along the bank, between 30 and 40 cm,” explains Captain Eric Stazik who led the intervention.

”The car was on its roof. The driver was stuck in the sheet metal, upside down. His body was in the water which had entered the passenger compartment. The victim had to be extricated. The man was slightly injured, his life is not in danger. He is doing well after such a fall. The driver was taken care of by emergency doctors and admitted to the Epicura hospital center in Ath for a check-up and some treatment, having stayed in the water which was cold,” specifies the officer.
