Emir of Qatar hosted by Erdogan in Istanbul

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with the Emir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Friday at Wahideddin Palace on the Asian side of Istanbul. Erdogan and Sheikh Tamim exchanged a brief conversation, before moving to a closed meeting.

A statement by the Qatari Emiri Diwan stated that Sheikh Tamim discussed with Erdogan “the existing strategic relations between the two countries, and ways to develop and develop them in various fields.” During the meeting, they exchanged views on all issues and developments on the regional and international arenas, in addition to a number of issues of common interest, according to the statement.

And on Thursday evening, the Qatari Amiri Diwan announced in a statement that Sheikh Tamim went to Turkey on a working visit, following an official visit to Iran that lasted for one day.

The Qatar News Agency (QNA) quoted the Turkish ambassador in Doha, Mustafa Kokso, as saying that the Emir of Qatar will discuss with the Turkish president the strengthening of bilateral relations and coordination of positions between the two countries regarding many files.

The Turkish ambassador described the visit of the Emir of Qatar to Turkey as “very important”, and that it comes in light of regional and international developments, “and therefore will be important to strengthen Turkish-Qatari coordination in many situations and files.”

The relations between the two countries are witnessing a growing development and continuous cooperation at various levels, with great political harmony and agreement in views on many regional and international issues, especially the Middle East issues.

The Turkish president visited Doha in January, where he met the Emir of Qatar. Erdogan also headed his country’s delegation to the meetings of the seventh session of the Supreme Strategic Committee between the two countries, where the two countries renewed their joint commitment to continue and strengthen regional and global efforts to establish international peace and security, combat terrorism and resolve conflicts by peaceful means.

Since 2014, 28 summits have been held between the Emir of Qatar and Turkish President Erdogan, the last of which was the January summit in Doha, when the two sides signed a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding that included endowments, Islamic affairs, media, communication, culture, disaster and emergency management, to standardize standards, small and medium enterprises, and investments.

The final statement of the Supreme Strategic Committee between the two countries said that the two sides discussed many aspects of their strong and distinguished relationship, including regional security and cooperation in the fields of defense, health, trade, investment, energy, aviation, tourism, culture and education.

Turkey is one of the most important trading partners of Qatar, and the volume of trade exchange between the two countries has witnessed a remarkable increase, and it rose from 340 million dollars in 2010 to 2.24 billion dollars in 2019. The two countries hope to raise the volume of trade exchange between them to five billion dollars, and Turkey is a distinguished destination for investors. Qataris, as there are many successful Qatari investments in the country, including real estate, tourism, and others.

The tangible development in the volume of trade between the two countries is mainly due to the close relations and mutual visits, and the presence of many trade and investment agreements signed in the public and private sectors. These agreements facilitated the establishment and establishment of mutual investments, and helped increase the flow of goods and commodities in both directions, especially with the signing of the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement between the two governments in 2018, and the inauguration of shipping lines between them.

More than 711 Turkish companies operate in Qatar, including 664 companies with Qatari and Turkish capital, and 47 with 100 percent Turkish capital, as well as 15 Turkish companies in the free zone in Qatar, while more than 183 Qatari companies operate in Turkey.
