ROME, July 4 / WAM / At least six people were killed in an avalanche that occurred yesterday at Mount Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites in northern Italy, according to regional official Maurizio Fogatti.
Fogatti added that up to 14 people were also injured by the avalanche. Five helicopters and several teams of trained dogs were deployed to search for more people under blocks of ice, snow and rocks.
A seriously injured person was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Treviso. Also, 18 people waiting to be rescued after the ice sheet broke off were airlifted into the valley by helicopter.
The accident occurred on Mount Marmolata, where a large part of the ice sheet broke off and fell into the valley, and also collided with the way up the mountain, which has a height of three thousand and 343 meters, where many people were climbing.
Mario Draghi, the Italian Prime Minister, offered his condolences to the victims and relatives.
He announced that he would follow developments by the civil defense and regional politicians.
