(Ecofin Agency) – Women are a key driver of sustainable development in Africa. By improving their skills, particularly in digital, they can better contribute to the growth and transformation of the continent.

UN Women Germany and the technology company Siemens launched a program on Tuesday 31 May aimed at training girls and young women in Africa in digital skills.

“We are delighted to have partnered with Siemens to invest in girls’ education and empowerment in Africa. By working together, we can enable young women to develop future-oriented skills in a protected environment and empower them to learn the skills needed to succeed nationally and internationally.”said UN Women Germany President Elke Ferner.

The program targets over 600 young women in five countries namely South Africa, Kenya, Senegal, Rwanda and Uganda. It will start in June in Johannesburg, South Africa before spreading to other countries.

Participants will be trained under the African Girls Can Code (AGCCI) initiative whose mission is to train young women aged 17-25 in digital literacy, programming and work readiness skills. They will also benefit from a comprehensive six-month mentoring program called “SieMent EmpowHer”, developed by Siemens South Africa.

Through the SieMent EmpowHer program coupled with the AGCCI, young women will be offered training and workshops in robotics, cybersecurity, animation, 3D printing, gender equality, as well as women’s empowerment, leadership, work and communications. These trainings will be oriented towards building the employment capacities of women with a view to reducing the gender gap in digital technology.
