Empowering Rural and Low-Income Students in the Valley to Pursue Medical Careers

Students from various school districts in the Valley began their first medical courses under the supervision of a local doctor.

The classes are part of a program to motivate students from rural areas and low-income sectors who want to enter the medical profession in the future.

“More than 20 years ago, when there were students who wanted to pursue a career in the medical profession, there was no assistance. They were doing everything on their own, they had to know how to navigate and ask questions,” said Beatrize Valenzuela, Region One coordinator.

The screened program begins when students enter high school. Likewise, the student will have to show interest in medicine.

“Sometimes moral support is lacking because there are families that do not understand, because their children want to study medicine, because it is such a sacrificed, long career,” said Verónica Escobedo, a doctor at the DHR Hospital.

If your child is interested in a medical career, they should contact their Gear-Up counselor. Enrollment begins from the eighth school year.
