For Toni Beck, a 13-year breast cancer survivor, this walk is deeply personal.”it’s a beautiful place to walk, but it’s a mission for me because I’m a 13-year breast cancer survivor, and I am determined to make a difference in the fight against that horrible disease,” Beck stated. “Every step we take in November will be getting us one step closer to a cure.” She emphasized the urgency of finding a solution to eliminate this devastating diagnosis for future generations.

Months of Rigorous Training

The team commenced their training regimen in April, starting with modest two-mile walks and gradually increasing the distance to 15 miles. The most significant obstacle, according to Beck, is the endurance required. “It’s 20 miles on your feet, walking uphill, downhill, and on different types of terrain,” she explained, highlighting the physical demands of the event.

Battling Blisters and beyond

The training has not been without its hardships. Amber Diehl recounted her initial struggles with debilitating blisters. “I know at the beginning I was not smiling,” she confessed. “I had blisters on blisters upon blisters. But I still kept going until we could get up there.And I never stopped.” Beck shared a previous experience where doctors needed to cut holes in her shoes mid-walk to alleviate severe blistering under her toenails, turning the worn sneakers into a symbol of her unwavering determination.

Beck underscored that the physical discomfort pales in comparison to the challenges faced by those diagnosed with breast cancer. “It’s going to be hard, but being told you have breast cancer is also hard,” she said. “What we will do in three days is nothing compared to what a breast cancer patient goes through.And as a survivor, I don’t want anyone to ever hear those words again.”
