End of an era: Swisscom and Salt stop their MMS service

After Swisscom, Salt is also stopping its MMS service. This system, which allows photos and other videos to be sent over the mobile network, has become obsolete since the generalization of instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp.

‘MMS are less and less useful. Due to numerous alternatives (iMessage, Message+, WhatsApp, Signal, Threema, etc.) and a sharp drop in their use, the main Swiss telecommunications operators, including Salt, will stop offering the MMS service as of January 10, 2023 ‘, announces Salt on its website.

Asked by the Tribune de Genève and 24 Heures, Swisscom spokesman Christian Neuhaus said that “the use of the MMS service has fallen sharply since 2013 (the year of its peak with 63 million MMS sent only on the Swisscom network). MMS has steadily lost interest.’

The Swiss telecommunications giant had already announced last February the cessation of the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), an abandonment which has been done gradually since March. Since the beginning of this year, the service is no longer available at all.

Sunrise still hesitates

For its part, Sunrise is still feeling a little. “We will observe the situation and the needs of our customers with regard to this service and, if necessary, reassess them later,” a spokeswoman told La Tribune de Genève and 24 Heures.

MMS was launched in the early 2000s. At the time of the boom, each New Year for example, operators and the media regularly relayed statistics on the number of messages thus sent on the networks, in the tens of millions.
