The community of communes of Béthunois has announced that it will end the help and support service for the elderly or people with disabilities outside the city of Béthune. 236 users will find themselves without a service provider at the start of the school year.

The end of public aid. The Sivom, the inter-municipal union of the community of communes of Béthunois, has announced the end of a home help service for the elderly or people with disabilities outside the city of Béthune.

From the start of the next school year, 236 users will have to find another service provider to help them on a daily basis.

“I can’t do without”

This news is a blow for Didier. This resident of Fouquières-lès-Béthune suffers from multiple sclerosis. Caregivers must help him in his daily activities, three to four times a day.

“I’m not calm, I’m not sleeping well. For the moment, I have nothing when it’s vital, I can’t do without someone who helps me on a daily basis”, he is moved. at the microphone of BFM Grand Littoral.

The news was announced at the beginning of July, by mail, to users. In this letter, the union explains that it wants to refocus its activity in Béthune only, due to a deficit of more than 2 million euros. “We can no longer support such a deficit which could jeopardize the whole of SIVOM”, indicates its president, Pierre Emmanuel Gibson, to France Blue.

33 agents without a contract in September

This situation is denounced by the union Force Ouvrière. The Secretary General deplores a brutal announcement for both users and carers. “We arrive on a period of seven to eight weeks for a deficit of 35 years”, regrets Éric Cabre, Sivom agent and Force Ouvrière staff representative.

“This is a real problem for users and for the 33 agents who find themselves in contact with Sivom until August 31 and September 1, their contract will not be renewed”, adds the union delegate.

Contacted by BFM Grand Lille, the Sivum du Béthunois assured that it was committed to finding positions for agents and that all those concerned would have home help at the start of the school year. For now, 150 of them have already found a service provider.
