“Ending the Book Ban: Illinois Set to Make History with New Legislation”

2023-05-30 17:30:01

As unbelievable as it may seem, Gov. JB Pritzker is expected to sign a bill that would make Illinois the first state to legislate to end the book ban. In the United States, censorship is legal. The proposed law would block essential state funding for public libraries and public schools that ban books. Book bans in U.S. public schools rose 28% in the first semester of the 2022-2023 school year, the writers organization Pen America has announced. According to the American Library Association in Chicago, 67 attempted book bans took place in Illinois in 2022, compared to 41 in 2021. Also in 2022, more than 2,500 books were objected to in the country. In Florida, a parental complaint was enough for the poem by Amanda Gorman that she wrote and performed for the inauguration of Joe Biden, in 2021, to be removed from an establishment.
