England women’s national team win EURO 2022

AA / Ankara / Can Erozden

The English won their first European football title on Sunday thanks to their 2-1 victory over Germany in the EURO 2022 final.

Tournament hosts England opened the scoring in the 62nd minute through substitute Ella Toone who, after a long through ball, deceived German goalkeeper Merle Frohms.

But Germany equalized in the 79th minute when midfielder Lina Magull scored after a low pass from Tabea Wassmuth just outside the box.

Regulation time ended with a score of 1-1, so extra time was to decide the victory.

During a scramble in the German area, England’s Chloe Kelly scored the winning goal in the 110th minute, making the English champions of Europe.

After the triumph over the Germans, England striker Beth Mead was named the tournament’s best player.

This was the third EURO final for England after 1984 and 2009.

Germany remain the most successful team in Women’s EURO tournaments, having won the crown eight times, most recently in 2013.

Also, it is England’s first major football trophy since 1966, when the England men’s team won the FIFA World Cup.

In 2020, England – also known as the Three Lions – reached the EURO final but failed to win the title.

Italy were crowned winners of Men’s EURO 2020 last summer, beating England on penalties at Wembley Stadium.
