Ensuring Stability: The Concerns and Solutions for Public Services Amidst the Olympic Games

While the main air traffic controllers’ union has just announced an “Olympic truce”, the president of the Hauts-de-France region is worried about a risk of a last-minute strike before the Olympics within public services such as RATP or SNCF.

Xavier Bertrand warns about the functioning of public services as the Olympic Games approach. “Today there are unions, certain coordinations which are preparing to, on the eve of the Olympic Games, ask for maximum progress for them,” mentioned the president of the Hauts-de-France region. France on the CNews set. He questions in particular the conditions of the “Olympic truce” recently agreed to by two unions of air traffic controllers and the General Directorate of Civil Aviation.

The agreement provides for “an increase in compensation”, “a commitment to an Olympic truce until September 2024” and the principle of new salary discussions at this deadline, declared one of the national secretaries of the SNCTA union (60% of the votes of controllers in the last professional elections). This commitment not to strike during the great sports festival next summer, previously revealed by the Minister for Transport Clément Beaune, includes, according to him, the other union which participated in the conciliation meetings, the UNSA-ICNA.

Drawing inspiration from the Italian case

The president of the Hauts-de-France region is especially concerned that similar agreements are occurring within other public service companies such as SNCF or RATP. “Rather than paying a ransom, it is up to the law to protect both the French and guarantee public service,” he insists. “It was I who had the law passed a long time ago on the minimum service which has brought a lot of improvements. Today, we need an additional step.”

“If we want to protect the State, taxpayers’ money, the French who take transport and essential public services, we must change this law on minimum service and move now, as in Italy, towards a law on the guaranteed service.”

While Clément Beaune welcomed “the commitment made by the (two) unions to avoid any social movements during the current and upcoming major sporting events of the Olympic and Paralympic Games”, Xavier Bertrand calls on the Minister of Transport to show anticipation: “We know full well that, in the coming months, other professions will do the same thing by saying ‘we’ll give you your Olympic break and pay’. If you want to avoid that, we need a new law.”
