Just as the popularity of smartphones has increased over the years, so has the popularity of mobile games in the mainstream gaming market. Today, more people want to experience their PC and console games with amazing graphics on their mobile devices, raising expectations of smartphone gaming performance.

The Galaxy S23 5G lineup* leverages the best and most powerful processor in a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, increasing performance by 41% over the Galaxy S22 5G lineup. Among the improvements is Ray Tracing, which brings realistic lighting to mobile games and has been catching the attention of gamers around the world.

Ray Tracing technology in the Galaxy S23 5G lineup, which creates an immersive mobile gaming experience, was introduced at Galaxy Unpacked 2023

Samsung Newsroom caught up with the developers of Ray Tracing recently introduced in the Galaxy S23 5G lineup to understand the story behind how the team has updated the mobile gaming experience. Read on to learn more about one of the biggest leaps in smartphone gaming graphics in years.

Ray Tracing: Take your gaming experience to the next level with realistic graphics

Ray Tracing is the latest rendering technology that runs graphical effects in real time by tracing rays of light. The Galaxy S23 5G line’s GPU is equipped with specially focused hardware to accelerate these light ray simulations similar to a PC processor, displaying shadows and light reflections in mobile games in a much more realistic manner.

Jungwoo Kim of Samsung’s Systems Platform Development Group managed the creation of the GPU for the Galaxy S23 5G lineup, describing ray tracing technology as “the ultimate method of graphics rendering”.

“Ray tracing is a complex simulation that traces how an eye’s optic nerve receives a light ray after it is reflected, refracted or diffracted by an object,” said Kim. “It’s very similar to how light is actually processed.”

“The previous tracking technique is limited, resulting in strange and inaccurate expressions,” said Joonyong Park, who managed GPU technical support and internal and external cooperation for the Galaxy S23 5G. “As far as the shadow effect is concerned, for example, the previous method used to project an object into a scene created a shadow map in advance and adjusted the projection onto the object again. On the other hand, Ray Tracing simulates the actual effect of how shadows are formed, which accurately and realistically appears on the screen – so people can enjoy more natural-looking graphics.”

Bridging the gap between desktop and mobile graphics with the Galaxy S23 5G lineup

Since 2010, Samsung has focused on breaking down the barriers between console, desktop and smartphone by expanding the performance and reach of its Graphics API (Application Programming Interface). By partnering with the industry’s leading manufacturers, Samsung has led the way in standardizing their latest technology to the most commonly used API. By doing so, more companies can easily apply the technology to more games and expand their relevant ecosystems.

“In 2016, we standardized the next-generation graphics API called Vulkan, released by the Khronos Group, and achieved commercialization through the Galaxy S7,” said Kim. “We’ve been working on advanced GPU development with partners like Epic Games and Unity to optimize Android gaming performance since 2015, before Vulkan was integrated into Galaxy devices. The optimization code we acquired by working together was first provided to game developers, and it became the success story for Vulkan in engine optimization. The achievement has been featured at several developer conferences.”

In line with recent growing trends in cross-platform gaming, Samsung has quickly applied desktop GPU technology to its mobile processor. “With close cooperation with processor vendors, we continue to improve the latest mobile GPU performance for flagship products,” said Park. “With more people demanding that the graphics quality on their mobile devices match the quality on consoles, we’ve been preparing to offer ray tracing technology in mobile games for two years now,” he said, describing his team’s proactive effort to lead this mobile innovation.

Multi-player collaboration boosting mobile performance

Developers cooperated with Samsung Ukraine R&D Institute (SRUKR) and various partner companies including Unreal Engine developer Epic Games to prepare the best graphics.

Kim explained that the demo content featured at Galaxy Unpacked 2023 was a team effort. “This is an area we are working on in collaboration with a graphics engine developer and game developers,” said Kim. “We continue to make several attempts at efficient rendering. As a result, we were able to overcome the challenges by reducing the number of calculations and maintaining the same level of quality.”

Park also shared an episode of when he was working on the development of the Galaxy S7.

“I remember developing a content demo at Epic Games headquarters in North Carolina in the United States,” said Park. “We successfully rendered a demo game where a chicken character appeared, using the Vulkan API for the first time. As the chicken first appeared after fixing a bug, everyone at Epic Games, SRUKR, and colleagues on the MX R&D team cheered. So we all celebrated with a festive dinner, and we had fried chicken.” Park thanked the colleagues he worked so hard with to achieve this feat.

Galaxy S23 5G line opens a new level for mobile gaming

So what does the future look like where ray tracing technology is commercialized? “From now on, I expect the pathway for creating and consuming graphic content to change in line with ray tracing,” said Park. “In this process, we expect mobile devices with portability and high-performance hardware to contribute to changes in this market, along with consoles.”

“You can certainly expect an engaging gaming experience,” said the Ray Tracing developers, speaking to fans looking forward to the gaming performance of the new Galaxy. The developers also shared their plans to use this technology on a large scale, starting with the Galaxy S23 5G lineup.

“Ray tracing technology is starting to make its way onto mobile devices. As Samsung has been researching and preparing this technology for a long time, our company will lead the industry and rapidly expand this technology,” said Kim. “Our next goal is to find the optimal method to apply ray tracing to many mobile devices and provide people with a great gaming experience.”

“Mobile games that enable ray tracing are not yet commercially available, but if there is a gaming company that shows interest in the technology, they would be more than welcome,” said Park. When asked about the future of mobile gaming performance, Park responded that they are “working hard to apply ray tracing technology to more games”.

The developers’ long-term vision is to present even more immersive mobile gaming experiences with realistic graphics in the future.
