EPFL scientists show that breathing can be used to activate an additional robotic arm in healthy people. And this without interfering with the control of other parts of the body, according to this work published in the journal Science Robotics.

‘Our work opens up new and exciting possibilities by showing that we can actually control additional arms, and that we can do it while simultaneously controlling our two natural arms,’ explains Silvestro Micera, Bertarelli Chair in Neuroengineering. translational research at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL), cited Wednesday in a press release from the latter.

The study is part of the ‘Third-Arm Project’, which aims to provide people with a robotic arm to assist them in everyday tasks, or to assist in rescue operations. It could also be used for disabled people, or involved in rehabilitation protocols after a stroke.
