The star of the hit series is undergoing immunotherapy treatment after surgery to rid him of cancer.
German actor Eric Braeden, star of Flames of love for 43 years, has been battling cancer. The one who plays the character of Victor Newman in the hit series shared his diagnosis with his fans in a video posted on his Facebook account on Friday.
The 82-year-old actor says the first symptoms came after knee surgery, when he had difficulty urinating and attributed it to a prostate problem.
“I hate talking about such intimate things, but I think it might be beneficial for some older men who might be listening to me,” the 82-year-old actor explains. “The prostate grows as you get older, it’s inevitable.”
A first urologist relieves him temporarily but, when the symptoms reappear, Eric Braeden decides to go to the emergency room. And it is by examining his bladder that the doctor discovers cancer.
“I was destabilized, but determined to fight,” says the actor. “He scheduled surgery to remove the cancer.”
“That bastard ain’t gonna get me”
“After the surgery, he said to me, ‘I think I managed to get everything out’,” he continues. “He had me come back a week later and studied the biopsy report (…) Among the cancer cells that were not very aggressive, he had found cancer cells that were.”
The doctor prescribed him six weeks of immunotherapy, a treatment aimed at strengthening his immune system so that it attacks these cells. The actor has just completed his second session.
“That bastard isn’t going to get me. I’ll get him and I’ll be in great shape soon,” he added.
And to conclude, visibly moved: “I’m so happy to go to work. I like it, it distracts me, I like acting and I like knowing that I’m entertaining people. I like your support, it means a lot. So if a member of your family is going through this, support them.” At the end of March, the actor revealed on Facebook that a “malignant tumor” had been removed from his bladder, without further explanation.
Launched in 1973, The Fires of Love is currently at its fiftieth season. Eric Braeden joined the program in 1980 and has appeared in nearly 4,000 episodes since.
