ESA satellite Aeolus approaching Earth’s surface – space

2023-07-28 17:23:48

Two months ago, Aeolus ended his service to science at an altitude of 320 kilometers. The weather satellite of the European space agency Esa had successfully sent data for wind profiles to earth from 2018, which also improved weather forecasts. Five years later, Esa heralded its end. In the night from Friday to Saturday, the satellite should mostly burn up, the remaining debris should fall over the Atlantic – as far away as possible from land areas. The final phases of the maneuver have begun. At around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, the flight control team in Darmstadt, Germany, reported that the satellite had received its final instructions and might no longer be influenced. In the hours that follow, it will be destroyed on its way back to Earth.
