The project has been on the cards for SNCB for some time. Etterbeek station, whose building dates back to 1880, is about to be thoroughly renovated. In 2020, an architectural competition was launched. And three years later, a new decisive step has just been taken. We learn that the permit application was submitted on July 13 to the Brussels Region.

In particular, it is planned to restore the building, to build a pedestrian cycle bridge between B-boulevard de la Plaine and avenue de la Couronne giving access to the platforms, to create two parking lots for bicycles, to replace the platform shelters and to install six elevators. A green roof is planned with also solar panels. “The objective of this modernization of the station is to develop this intermodal hub and to design a functional, sustainable and accessible station. The project also wants to respond to a request from local players to connect developing districts, currently separated by the railway”, comments the SNCB.

Etterbeek station, which is actually located in the territory of Ixelles, welcomes 35,000 passengers per week, and accommodates 18 connections per hour.

Construction should not start for a year and a half. “We hope to start work on the footbridge in the course of 2025 but this will have to be confirmed in a later phase of the project. The station will remain in service during all the works.”
