EU emergency meeting on energy in September

Czech Industry and Trade Minister Jozef Sikela said on Monday that EU energy ministers would hold emergency talks on September 9, amid rising prices in Europe on Ukraine war background.

“We will meet in Brussels on September 9. We need to fix the energy market,” the Czech minister, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, said on Twitter.

At a time when Europe is trying somehow to reduce its dependence on Russian oil and gas supplies following the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Mr Sikela called an emergency meeting of the 27.

The main objective of the European Commission is to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian gas by two thirds this year and to end its dependence on Russian fuel supplies before 2030.

The Russian energy sector has been the main target of European sanctions which ban imports of coal from Russia.
