European Parliament asks Venezuela to release political prisoners

The European Parliament demanded this Thursday the release of Venezuelan political prisoners. The European Parliament addressed directly the administration of Nicolás Maduro to take these measures, and requested the European Union to increase sanctions against Miraflores.

The resolution approved by 497 votes in favor, 22 against and 27 abstentions.

The instance demanded “the immediate unconditional release of all political prisoners and people arbitrarily detained, as well as the full restoration of their rights”.

Likewise, the Maduro administration was invited to “cease its policy of repression and attacks against civil society and the opposition”.

The European Parliament’s announcement was prompted by the arrest of human rights activist Rocío San Miguelwho has been held in El Helicoide since last February.

To date, San Miguel’s lawyers have repeatedly denounced the condition in which she finds herself, mainly because the lack of communication with both his defenders and his family.
