After international sanctions against Niger, a second stage could be reached by the European Union (EU) in the coming weeks. This legal framework decided since Monday by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, opens the way to more targeted sanctions against representatives of the junta or their supporters.
« Military coups have a cost [financier] », has just declared the head of European diplomacy, Joseph Borrel, and it is therefore through the portfolio that the EU could now strike the leaders of the junta in power. The arsenal – which remains to be refined by a working group – can range from freezing the assets of people indexed to a ban on traveling to Europe or benefiting from the sending of money from the European Union.
The Council’s press release specifies that the persons punishable will be those who threaten peace in Niger, commit human rights violations or who undermine the constitutional order. For the moment, Brussels, in brandishing this threat, does not mention any name or date. However, it is specified, from a diplomatic source, that if the arsenal is about to be finalized by a working group, no sanctions will be undertaken before consultation with ECOWAS which remains Niamey’s main interlocutor in the crisis that crosses the Niger.
