Women agreed to her for a reason.

The cultural traditions of countries are sometimes reflected even in personal care. Such habits may shock tourists who do not know their full history and background. This is proven by the example of Japanese women who amaze the rest of the world with a certain cosmetic technique.

Back in the old days, local women began to blacken their teeth. The ritual was called ohaguro. There was a special paint for this. At first, it was used not only by girls, but also by aristocratic men, warriors, children and samurai. Over time, this custom nevertheless became the lot of the fair sex.

In some cities, the teeth of those girls who are preparing for a wedding are blackened. In others, on the contrary, ohaguro extended only to already married ladies. Japanese women agreed to it in order to look especially charming. It was believed that black teeth visually make the face and mouth smaller and the outline of the lips softer. Because of this, a special pretty appearance is created.

The tradition also had practical benefits. The paint made teeth strong and protected against caries. But strangers, arriving in Japan, were invariably surprised by this custom. In the memoirs of some sailors, women’s black teeth were called disgusting.

In modern Japan, the ritual remains only for religious ceremonies and actresses of traditional theaters. In addition, blackening of teeth is sometimes used by comedians.
