The incident occurred when driving through a town after almost 20 kilometers of the rainy section from the Apennines to the Amalfi Coast.
Said dog ran onto the road from the left side and didn’t touch any driver, but a team colleague Evenepoels driving on the far left got caught on the rear wheel of a Jumbo – Visma professional when dodging on soaking wet asphalt and fell. He skidded several meters over the obviously very slippery road.
Evenepoel himself fell on the right curb as the rest of the field slowed down to avoid colliding with the dog. The World Champion then sat quietly on the gravel for a while before getting back on his bike and, accompanied by his teammates, chasing the field of riders.

The peloton continued at a calm pace, nobody wanted to profit from the bad luck of the top favourite. After almost five kilometers Evenepoel and his companions were back at the front.
The motto of the fifth day of racing at this 106th Tour of Italy was ‘Slipping’ right from the start. The peloton set off in continuous rain and even before the Evenepoel incident there was a fall in the early breakaway group of the day.
However, all the drivers who fell in the first hour of the race were able to continue the race uninjured.
