How to eat gooseberries

There are really many reasons to eat gooseberries regularly – but what is the best way to integrate the small fruit, which tastes so wonderfully tart, into your diet? In fact, it can be wonderfully eaten raw and as a snack in between meals. But it is also particularly popular to make jam, compote or mush. In addition, the gooseberry is a popular cake topping.

Which gooseberry variety is the best?

A distinction is made between green, red and yellow gooseberries. They are all healthy and full of vitamins – but there are a few differences in taste. The most popular are probably the red gooseberry “Remarka”, which tastes particularly sweet and aromatic, and the “Yellow Triumph Berry”, which also has a very sweet taste. One of the main varieties in the home garden is also the “Invicta”, which brings high and reliable yields.

Gooseberries: Not for everyone

While the gooseberry has a ton of health benefits, it’s not for everyone. If you have a sensitive stomach, it is better to avoid gooseberries, as their skin is difficult to digest. And also unripe fruits should not be consumed in large quantities. If gooseberries are unripe, they contain glyoxylic acid, which in turn can produce oxalic acid – and in the worst case, this has a negative effect on the kidneys and promotes the formation of kidney stones.
