Johannesburg ∙ It has been decided to expand BRICS by including 6 more countries including Iran and Saudi Arabia. Other countries are Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia and UAE. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the current head of the association, announced that an agreement has been reached between the member countries and their membership will come into effect on January 1 next. He said adding more countries would make the organization a decisive force in the new world order. In his speech at the summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for BRICS to be expanded and modernized by creating unity of opinion.
BRIC was formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. In 2010, South Africa became BRICS. BRICS is a bloc that currently represents 41 percent of the world’s population. BRICS countries account for 24 percent of global GDP and 16 percent of trade. China’s President Xi Jinping said the current development will help strengthen BRICS and make it a critical force in world peace and development. It is also a sign that BRICS is becoming a dominant power for China as an alternative to the US in the global power struggle.
Ramaphosa said BRICS will take the initiative to provide opportunities for growth and sustainable development for all countries by finding solutions to conflicts through peaceful negotiations. Brazil’s President Lula da Silva said many of the promises of globalization have failed and developing countries should improve cooperation and seek new ways of growth.
Modi in Greece today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Greece today after completing bilateral talks with many world leaders during the BRICS summit. This is the first time in 40 years that the Indian Prime Minister has visited Greece. Modi held a brief meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of the BRICS leaders’ press conference. The two are now holding talks after their meeting in Bali during the G20 summit in November last year. Relations between the two countries are strained due to the border conflict.
