The world’s new largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, sets sail from the Port of Miami, Florida for its maiden voyage to the Caribbean.

It is 46 meters high, the equivalent of a 17-story building. Its weight is 250,800 tonnes, as much as 5 Titanics combined.

With 7 swimming pools, an artificial surf wave and an aquatic center made up of 6 slides, it is a real amusement park at sea. On board, 2,805 cabins can accommodate 7,514 passengers. At their service are 2,350 crew members.

To enjoy the cruise, you can stroll on the boat’s 20 decks, eat in one of the 40 bars and restaurants, and take advantage of the fifteen entertainment venues, such as an ice rink or an equipped performance hall. of a 17 meter high waterfall. Among the activities offered: shopping, playing mini-golf or walking on a beam above the ocean.

This offer obviously has a cost: count at least 2,000 euros per person for a week of cruise. But, depending on the standard of your suite with balcony and sea view, this figure can rise to several tens of thousands of euros.

Built in Finland for 3 years, the boat runs on liquefied natural gas. According to the company, it is the cleanest fossil fuel. It helps reduce carbon emissions by around 30%. “Liquefied Natural Gas is a step and we are working with manufacturers to develop new technologies. So each step is a step closer to the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality”explains Stig Eriksen, chief engineer of the “Icon of the Seas”.

An opinion contested by various maritime transport specialists. For them, liquefied natural gas, composed of methane, is a powerful greenhouse gas harmful to the climate. “From the moment you start using Liquefied Natural Gas as a marine fuel, including on cruise ships, you emit more greenhouse gas emissions than with current fuels”denounces Bryan Comer, director of the maritime program at the international clean transportation council.

If the boat is at the center of controversy, its inaugural cruise was sold out less than a month after ticket sales opened.
