Kiryat Shmona is one of the most prominent Israeli cities, especially in the occupied northern Palestine region, because it is the regional center for the surrounding settlements, in terms of health services, industry, business services, and trade.

The city’s area is about 14.75 square kilometers, which is 4 times the area of the city of Tire in southern Lebanon. However, the repeated attacks carried out by Hezbollah against Kiryat Shmona make the latter an uninhabitable area, at a time when one of the military sites described it as a “ghost” city and unable to provide for the needs of other areas until it is restored.

What is the most prominent and important information about Kiryat Shmona?

Since the beginning of the Al-Aqsa flood battle in Gaza on October 7, and because of the resistance front in Lebanon, 23 thousand settlers of its population have been displaced from this city (noting that according to data and estimates of the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) until the end of December 2023, There are 23,515 settlers living in Kiryat Shmona, and what has made the residents’ situation worse is that some of the hotels that are housing them have recently threatened them and asked them to vacate their rooms, and this may be due to the owners of these hotels fearing that the Israeli government will not approve the financial benefits they are requesting.

The Netanyahu government’s decision to evacuate the settlers of this city is considered a strategic blow to the settlement project in the Upper Galilee region, because Kiryat Shmona is considered a measure of security stability on the northern border with Lebanon, and in the past 10 years it has witnessed a boom in its economic development, especially in the high-tech sector.

This city was established in 1949 on the ruins of the village of Al-Khalisa (whose people were displaced to southern Lebanon), four kilometers from the border, with the aim of dispersing settlers throughout occupied Palestine and preventing their concentration in coastal cities, and strengthening security control in areas far from the center and with the aim of preventing the return of Palestinians. .

Kiryat Shmona is the largest settlement city in the Finger of Galilee region, so it has been taken as a regional center for the surrounding settlements in health services, industry, business services and trade.

Ironically, the word “Kiryat Shmona” means “the settlement of the eight” in Arabic, so this name was chosen for it to commemorate what they claim is the heroism of 8 settlers who chose to fight “until death or leave” in the Battle of Tel Hai (adjacent to the city in 1920).

The most prominent landmarks of the settlement city:

1- Kiryat Shmona Museum, which was established in the place of the Khalsa Mosque, which was built in 1906.

2- The region includes two industrial zones with many companies and factories, especially those related to handicrafts, locks, garages, and carpentry.

3- On September 2, 2020, the Israeli International Center for Food Technology was launched there.

4- The settlement includes 6 primary schools for 1,800 students, 4 secondary schools for 1,750 students, and 5 schools for teaching people with special needs or for vocational and technical education, in addition to a university college and a religious school.

5- There are dozens of restaurants and tourist institutions in Kiryat Shmona.
