BYD innovates and announces the company’s first cargo ship

BYD, the greentech global leader in clean energy vehicles, has begun an innovative chapter in maritime transportation with the maiden voyage of its first dedicated carrier, EXPLORER NO.1. The vessel was officially delivered to the port of Yantai, Shandong province, on January 10, before beginning its maiden voyage from the international logistics port of Xiaomo, Shenzhen, China.

EXPLORER NO.1, which proudly bears BYD’s official identification, provides a significant boost to BYD’s international logistics capabilities amid limited global shipping resources. Measuring 199.9 meters in length, the vessel also exemplifies BYD’s commitment to sustainable shipping due to pioneering advances in green and smart shipbuilding technologies. With an exceptional payload capacity of 7,000 vehicles, EXPLORER NO.1 is equipped with an innovative conventional fuel and dual-fuel LNG (liquefied natural gas) propulsion system.

Over the next two years, seven more vessels are expected to join the fleet, all integrating BYD’s energy storage battery technology and shaft generator systems, truly embodying BYD’s vision for a greener era of maritime transportation. .

Wang Junbao, general manager of BYD Corporate Division, highlighted that China’s clean energy vehicle sector reached a historic milestone in the previous year, with sales and production exceeding 9 million units, significantly contributing to global green mobility. The successful launch of EXPLORER NO.1 marks a key step for BYD in expanding overseas markets. In line with its collaborative spirit, the company plans to not only deploy these ships for its own operations, but also engage in open partnerships, developing a new era for Chinese automakers on the international stage.

Consolidating a leading position in the clean energy vehicle sector through industrial scale, advanced technology and manufacturing prowess, BYD achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, exporting 242,765 vehicles, an annual growth of 334.2%. Meanwhile, its total annual sales rose to more than 3.02 million units, solidifying BYD’s status as the world’s leading seller of clean energy vehicles. Today, BYD’s operation spans six continents, involving more than 70 countries and regions worldwide, reaching more than 400 cities, emphasizing its profound impact and reach in promoting green mobility solutions around the world.

BYD arrived in Brazil in 2015, when it opened its first 100% electric bus chassis assembly plant in Campinas (SP). In 2017, it opened a second factory, also in Campinas, to produce photovoltaic modules.

To supply the fleet of electric buses, in 2020 the company began operating its third factory in Brazil, at the Manaus Industrial Complex (PIM), dedicated to the production of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries.
