Exploring Iceland’s Basalt: Unlocking CO2 Reduction Potential with The Belgica Oceanographic Vessel

2023-07-23 06:30:00

The Belgica, the new Belgian oceanographic vessel, has just conducted a fifteen-day campaign around Iceland and its fjords. Scientists on board are very interested in basalt, the island’s volcanic rock, because it could play a role in reducing CO2 from the atmosphere.

Scientists took sediment cores from the bottom of the water. They want to quantify the absorption rate of CO2 in the water, once this basalt has dissolved. “What we are trying to do is to determine the conditions that would make it possible to accelerate this dissolution reaction in order, in the long term, to try to absorb as much CO2 as possible in the atmosphere.”

If the project could help reduce greenhouse gases, it will only be part of the solution.
