Yesterday around 100 visitors gathered in the former Kepler cinema in Favoriten to marvel at the premiere of the short film “Cage, Grafitti & Youth Culture”.

The film was created on the initiative of community leader Ali Gedik, who, as a former youth worker, worked with the Filmmaker Oskar Nöbauer rummaged through hundreds of hours of VHS material and then took a 22-minute look back at the 90s in Innerfavoriten – where mobile youth work began.

The film features street workers, young people from back then, police officers and charmingly grumpy Viennese, who were confronted by the young people in front of the camera about topics such as graffiti and playing football in cages. The film awakens you when you watch it nostalgic feelingsbut is surprisingly current with the conflicts and challenges mentioned.

Youth work is mobile

Mobile youth work is more important than ever in times of “multiple crises, Corona and global wars,” emphasized Manuela Smertnik, managing director of the Vienna youth centers, during the subsequent talk session, which was led by rapper Enes (part of the rap duo “EsRap”). Volkshilfe president and former mayor Michael Häupl and Mendim Deari (AK education officer) were completed.

Michael Häupl, under whose reign mobile youth work matured into an institution, gave insights into his youth and was happy about the little one Search-Faux-Pas by the discussion leader Bernhard Fellinger (Ö1), who incorrectly introduced him as a native of Ottakring. The evening, which felt like a kind of class reunion for youth work luminaries, then and now, took place at the restaurant’s delicious buffet “Southern” its end. The film shown is on the homepage of Volkshilfe Vienna Community Work and the Association of Vienna Youth Centers to stream for free.
