Knowing that in the last elections in 2019, 11.6% of Belgians did not vote and 5.4% voted blank or invalid. This therefore represents 17% of non-votes in total, a very significant percentage.
Among the guests of the show, there was Olivier Maes, 32 years old. He explains that he hasn’t been going to vote for several years, except in municipal elections, because coalitions don’t really suit him. “Political parties, with the number of seats they have had, always manage to form coalitions and make arrangements among themselves to do what they want. So, they still do what they want with our voice. they want to fix them.”
He will only vote in the municipal elections, because he has “minus that feeling.” For him, in the municipal elections, the citizens’ vote is really taken into account. And Olivier also assures that he has not received a fine for the fact that he has not appeared at the polls to vote for several years.
Democracy, a plurality of opinions
For Louis Michel, Minister of State MR, Olivier has a conception of democracy “curious”. He explains: “If I understood correctly, he is not happy because his opinion, basically, does not impose itself on everyone. But democracy is precisely that. The essence of democracy is is the plurality of opinions. (…) When it is necessary to constitute executives, it is extremely rare for a party to have an absolute majority. And this is not always desirable, it is perhaps more practical for operation, but a democracy takes into account all opinions.”
It would be better to convince the voters
It is therefore logical that we must meet everyone’s points of view to find a compromise. “Democracy cannot function without compromise. This is what, perhaps, too few citizens have difficulty understanding. The beauty of democracy is to take parts of the truth from all the opinions of way to meet the wishes or the breathing of the greatest number.”
Should the fines be increased? He is not in favor of it. “It would be better to convince voters. I respect his opinion, but if everyone had to react like him, democracy would be dead. It couldn’t work.”
It is essential, for Louis Michel, to explain to people “why is democracy complicated? Why are we never right alone in a democracy.”
