While cycling is gaining in popularity, some are in favor of a return to the registration of bicycles, an idea however strongly rejected by Vélo Québec.
Passers-by met by TVA Nouvelles on Saturday seemed open to such an idea.
“There might be tickets and it would be the same as the cars on the road, we share it, says a passerby. We should share the costs too.”
“I feel like maybe registering bikes might help reduce theft or make theft easier to trace,” said one woman.
But according to Vélo Québec program director Magali Brebonne, the cost of such a measure would be far too high.
“It would be useless,” she said. It would also be very difficult to find an amount that would be a proportionate contribution and adapted to the need for the bicycles and that would probably make the cost of administering the system higher than the income that we might draw from it.
With regard to bicycle theft, the SPVM uses a mobile application that allows you to register your bicycle by uploading a photo and indicating the serial number attached to it.
If the bike is stolen, just report it on the platform.
