The state of the Walloon roads is deplorable, it’s no secret. This is even an observation shared by the vast majority of motorists… And by a large section of local elected officials, to whom citizens generally turn to complain. Last May, Jacqueline Galant (MR), Deputy Mayor of Jurbise, announced her intention to travel the regional roads of Mons-Borinage to denounce their condition.
The latter compiles the most problematic places, in particular thanks to the citizens who provide it with information, and goes there to shoot a video broadcast on social networks. To date, the deputy mayor has already passed through six municipalities, namely Jurbise, Lens, Saint-Ghislain, Boussu, Frameries and Mons. It intends to stop on the territory of the 13 municipalities.
”I haven’t set an end date, I’m going at my own pace depending on the reports and the time available. The journey continues,” explains Jacqueline Galant. “I want to emphasize that I only drive regional roads and I am well aware that the local authorities are not responsible for the situation. Like me in Jurbise, they suffer from the inaction and poor management of the Walloon Region in terms of road maintenance. I am not targeting the power in place.”
Mayor for more than 20 years, the Jurbisienne regularly hears the grievances of users confronted with too many potholes on their route. “Between Jurbise and Lens, while work that was not a priority is being carried out, I am fighting to get the potholes repaired in the center of Jurbise. I requested an emergency intervention, just to reseal them. But on the side of the Region, I am answered with a sandwich to remind me of the procedures. It’s still not complicated! Our communal workers are able to do this. But they are not insured if they intervene on a regional road.”
In short, the MP is not at the end of her troubles. “In parallel with each video broadcast, I submit a written question to the Minister. He will be questioned about all the problems encountered during this regional tour. I believe that this is also the role of a deputy: to defend the whole of the region in which he is elected and to work for the benefit of the whole population, without being limited to a single municipality.
Is the Walloon region watching the social networks of the MP? It’s possible. “Simple coincidence or real reaction, a hole denounced for almost a year in Boussu was filled… The day after my visit.” It doesn’t matter why, that’s the main thing, we’ll say.
