The concept of exposome was born from the need to better understand the influence on the health of all exposures to which an individual is subjected during his entire lifetimetaking into account environmental exposures to chemical, physical, biological agents and socio-economic factors.
The challenges of research today are to characterize the different facets of the exposome, to characterize its effect on the occurrence of human diseases, in particular chronic diseases such as cancers, neurodegenerative or endocrine diseases, and to study the possible interactions between the components of the exposome, or between the exposome and the biological parameters. Finally, it is important in the long term to succeed in estimating the global impact of the exposome on healthand if possible to prioritize the impact of different risk factors.
This need is now recognized by scientists and society and is gradually becoming part of public policies. Better understanding the exposome is one of the objectives of the 4th national environmental health plan and the concept is enshrined in the Public Health Code.
However, questions still arise about the tools to be promoted, the methodological approaches to be implemented, so that the exposome takes its full place in the various fields of expertise in public health and ultimately in risk management.

To take stock of advances in research on the concept of the exposome, ANSES and Inserm organized the November 30th a scientific meeting “Exposome and public health: from research to expertise” at the Maison de la RATP.
Intended for the scientific community, associative and professional actors and public decision-makers, more than 320 people took part in this scientific meeting rich in lessons.

Cardiovascular damage, cancer, diabetes… every year, more than 70% of deaths in the world are due to chronic disease. They are linked to a combination of different risk factors, genetic or not, to which we are subjected during our lifetime. The exposome offers an analysis of non-genetic factors by studying all the exposures that a human being undergoes through his environment and throughout his life.
