High Blood Pressure as a Post-Covid Complication: Risk Factors and Implications

High blood pressure is known to be a risk factor for a severe course of Covid-19, but the reverse is also possible: anyone who survives an infection with Sars-CoV-2 is likely to suddenly develop high blood pressure. And: Covid-19 provokes high pressure more often than influenza.

These are the results of a study with more than 45,000 Covid 19 patients and almost 14,000 people suffering from the flu in New York, who returned to the respective clinic for various reasons on average within six months of their virus infection. The data for the Covid patients was collected between the beginning of 2020 and February 2020, for influenza patients between 2018 and February 2022.

A good 21 percent of the Covid-19 patients who did not previously have high blood pressure and who survived a severe course, as well as eleven percent with a milder course of Covid-19, later had high blood pressure above the 130/80 mm Hg, which is considered the normal range. For influenza, the corresponding figures were 16 percent and four percent.

Statistically speaking, anyone who has been infected with corona and had to be treated clinically for Covid-19 has twice the risk of high pressure as seriously ill influenza patients. Particularly affected by Covid-related high blood pressure were the im Journal „Hypertension“ According to the published study, people over the age of 40, black adults and vulnerable people with COPD, coronary artery disease and chronic kidney disease.

The American doctors also found differences with regard to the Covid 19 treatment: Patients who were treated with blood pressure-increasing agents – vasopressors – during corona therapy and to stabilize the patient were at above-average risk of persistent high blood pressure and those who were treated as anti-inflammatory received treatment with corticosteroids.

Because this is a retrospective observational study and other factors could also have an influence, the results cannot definitively prove a causal connection between high blood pressure and Covid 19 disease.
