The co-founder of the environmental movement Extinction Rebellion (XR), Roger Hallam, was sentenced to two years in prison on Friday for trying, in 2019, to disrupt air traffic at Heathrow Airport using drones.

Roger Hallam, 57, was arrested in September 2019 near London’s busiest airport, following a protest by the Heathrow Pause group, which opposed the construction of a third runway at the airport.

During this demonstration, activists from this group, born in the wake of Extinction Rebellion, attempted to take off drones, a small number of which were able to fly but without disrupting air traffic.

Roger Hallam and another co-accused were found guilty of conspiracy to cause a breach of the peace. Another activist pleaded guilty to the same charge and received a 17-month suspended prison sentence. They were also sentenced to community service.

Extinction Rebellion was created at the end of 2018 in the United Kingdom, before spreading to other countries. In 2019, he led a series of shock actions in the country and elsewhere in the world, entitled “Autumn Uprising”. The movement advocates civil disobedience to force governments to act on the climate crisis.
