The dust plume travels across most of Spain to reach south-east France, Germany and the south-east corner of Britain.
Due to sand from the Sahara, a smog situation prevails in the whole of Bohemia and parts of Moravia and Silesia according to information from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMU).
According to meteorologists, the sand, which increases the concentration of dust particles in the air, may be on the ground in the Czech Republic until Monday and has also caused air pollution. People in southern and eastern Spain were breathing particularly dirty air, with some stations recording PM10 concentrations four times above the permitted limit.
The latest episode, which has been running since April 6, is the third of its kind to arrive in Europe in recent weeks as reported by skynews.
The EU’s Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS) described the current dust cloud as “extremely intense”.
The previous two dust clouds remained mostly further south, over the Mediterranean and southern Europe, although some debris was found on cars as far north as Scandinavia in March.
Mark Parrington, senior scientist at CAMS, said the current dust cloud is part of the same pattern that has also brought heat to western Europe in recent days.
“Although it is not unusual for Saharan dust to reach Europe, there has been an increase in the intensity and frequency of such events in recent years, which could possibly be attributed to changes in atmospheric circulation patterns.”
The episode is expected to gradually end on Tuesday (09.014.2024), reaching Sweden, Finland, the Baltic and northwestern Russia, CAMS said.
