Some people notice a discharge from the eyes, which is a mixture of mucus, oil, skin cells, and other debris that accumulates in the corner of the eye during sleep, and it can be wet and sticky or dry and scaly.

Causes of eye discharge
Eye discharge usually does not indicate a serious problem, but if you notice a difference in the consistency, color and amount of sticky substance in the eye, it may indicate an infection or disease in the eye.
Common eye conditions associated with abnormal eye discharge include:
conjunctivitis
Eye discharge is a common symptom of conjunctivitis, which is the thin membrane that lines the white of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. Thick, yellow eye discharge can be caused by an eye infection.
In addition to itchy, irritated and red eyes, conjunctivitis is usually accompanied by white, yellow, or green mucus coming out of the eye that can form a crust along the lash line during sleep.
There are three types of conjunctivitis, they are viral, bacterial and allergic conjunctivitis.

Other eye infections
In addition to conjunctivitis, there are many eye infections that cause abnormal eye discharge, including eye herpes, fungal keratitis, and keratitis, usually caused by poor contact lens hygiene or swimming while wearing them.
These secretions may be clear and watery or thick, green and sticky, and it is necessary to consult an ophthalmologist immediately to obtain the appropriate treatment.
blepharitis
Blepharitis, a chronic disorder of the eyelids, describes either eyelash hair follicles or abnormal oil production from the meibomian glands located on the inner edge of the eyelids, and can lead to eye foamy discharge, eyelid crusting, as well as yellow or green pus in the eye.
corneal ulcer
Corneal ulcers are a sight-threatening infection of the cornea that resembles an abscess, usually caused by trauma to the eye or an untreated infection. Eye pain, redness, swollen eyelids, and thickened secretions are characteristic of a corneal ulcer.
dacryocystitis
When the tear duct is blocked, the lacrimal sac can become inflamed, resulting in a painful, swollen bump under the inner eyelid, along with pain and redness. Common symptoms of dacryocystitis include watery eyes, sticky eye discharge, and blurred vision.
dry eyes
Inadequate tear production or dysfunction of the meibomian glands can lead to dry eye syndrome, an often chronic condition in which the surface of the eye is not properly hydrated and becomes irritated and inflamed.
Symptoms of dry eyes include redness, blood congestion, a burning sensation, blurred vision, and a feeling that something is inside the eye. Sometimes, dry eyes can also cause a watery discharge.
contact lenses
If you wear contact lenses, you may find more secretions in your eyes. This can be due to a number of factors, including contact lens-related eye infections, poor fitting of the lens to the eye, resulting in dryness and irritation, and rubbing of the eyes.
Therefore, in the event of an increase in eye secretions when wearing contact lenses, it is recommended to remove them and consult a specialist to rule out any serious eye condition.

eye injury
A foreign object in the eye, such as dirt or chemicals, or an injury to the eye can cause a watery discharge as a normal protective response.
And if pus or blood occurs in the eye after being infected, you must immediately consult an ophthalmologist for treatment.
